RuBisCO binds Oxygen and will transfer it to RUBP if the carbon dioxide level is too low or the O2 level is too high, a generally wasteful process known as “photorespiration” because it consumes O2 and releases CO2. Many plants that live in hot, or especially hot and dry areas, have evolved mechanisms to keep RuBisCO in an environment enriched for CO2. These involved transferring CO2 onto 3-carbon molecules to make 4-carbon organic acids. That acid is then either transferred to nearby cells where the CO2 is released in the chloroplast of those cells for the Calvin cycle (C-4 plants), or collected and saved in the Vacuole during the night, then released during the day (CAM plants).
